A SENSE OF PLACE

LANDSCAPE & LOCATION PORTFOLIO

My roots are in Edinburgh, and the north.

Wherever I go, I’m drawn to stone and water; to hills and the edges of weather; to history, folklore, and a feeling of home.

📔Book with Ann-Marie Powell, ‘A Year of Colour’, out now!
📷 Garden Media Guild & PGPA

I love this author headshot of @ann_mariepowell - I love this author headshot of @ann_mariepowell - literally one click and done because neither of us likes posing very much! It turned out that, while working on her book, we also shared a love of texture, backlight, shadows, pops of colour, tiny details and the cycle of things. She herself is a terrific photographer; I think we look at garden details in a very similar way, so to be asked to work on her home garden project was a HUGE honour and compliment.

To AMP, J & G, who welcomed me into their garden and around their kitchen table so warmly, thank you. Ann-Marie’s book is full of heart, and colourful wisdom. Each time I visited was like having a personal masterclass with added tea and inappropriate laughter… Suffice to say, we had a lot of fun working on ‘A Year of Colour’; as well as her undisputed plant knowledge, she also has a strong pull to show even the most inexperienced gardener that small, achievable steps will make a big impact. Happy Publishing Eve, lovely chum x

I couldn’t remember sharing this rippling, evocati I couldn’t remember sharing this rippling, evocative garden from RHS Malvern last year. ‘Garden of the Wind’ was one I kept coming back to, with its gentle sensory connections. The harmonies of water on wet rock, the various textures of leaves, the clever way the unseen breeze was made into something more tangible in such a creative way! Frosty sunrise at @chilworthmanorvineyard last wee Frosty sunrise at @chilworthmanorvineyard last week, with their beautiful planting by The Watch House tasting barn…and alpacas! Love them so much 🤍 Grateful for winter light like this that makes early mornings so worth it. The gentle low arc of sunlight; the long shadows, the no-need-to-rush because it’s not changing too fast to keep up. This time of year is so special and I treasure the down time ❄️

Over and out for 2025. More great craic like this Over and out for 2025. More great craic like this for next year, I hope, with beautiful gardens and fabulous collaborations in the pipeline. Happy Hogmanay friends, and thanks for all your support!
Before the year turns and 2025 fades into the dist Before the year turns and 2025 fades into the distance, I wanted to thank you for your support, friendship and kind words this past year. It means more than you’ll know to connect with people in some small way through the images I make. I see more strongly than ever that gardens calm and regulate us, with the natural cycle of things bringing rhythm and a gentler pace, restoring balance. And the people I meet, in the course of this job that I love, are the most wonderfully uplifting and determined colleagues. Thank you to all who I’ve worked with this year, you make the world a better place 💚

These pictures from a play date with @wildstonefloral are of one of Leanne’s fabulous creations with the very last of the year’s dahlias. We felt like exploring the style of the Dutch Masters - and that Savoy cabbage was not wasted, it went into a veggie soup shortly afterward!
Shining winter lanterns of Nicandra physalodes vs Shining winter lanterns of Nicandra physalodes vs its autumn appearance. Seedheads are magic, aren’t they? Not the end, but the beginning of the garden springing to life before too long. Still laughing that when I made a note of the name, my phone wanted to autocorrect to No, Andrea 🤭 Thanks for the ident @scott.brooksgardens 😄

In winter, the view of the Water Garden at @bethch In winter, the view of the Water Garden at @bethchattogardens completely opens up. You can see from end to end of the series of ponds; the stream is uncovered, the trees show their individual skeleton forms; a heron sits watching over the reservoir reflections. In my opinion, there is nothing quite as reviving as a wintery walk in this low, delicious light. The stillness of winter is unmatched at any other time of year; meanwhile, the first Galanthus, Narcissus and Hellebores have broken through. Saturday is the garden’s last day of the season before taking a winter break until February (and a couple of wonderfully sunny days squeezing in, if you need the headspace of a walk while basking in rays, as I often stop to do while photographing!).
