PERFECT DETAILS

The most humble and insanely talented person I have worked with. Julie, thank you for listening to my visions and then capturing them in such a way as to totally exceed any hoped for results. You are never thrown by my concepts, and always find the perfect details. I can’t wait to work with you again.

‘The Water Garden in May’

Acidic greens take centre stage in Beth Chatto’s Water Garden in spring. Blocks of colour are beginning to appear at this time of year, and the evening sun highlights the varied forms of the planting and trees in this moisture-rich area.

A December dawn at Chilworth Manor Vineyard when the temperature measured -8ºC!

PGPA, August 2023

‘Late summer in the Gravel Garden’

Awarded 1st place, Image of the Month

7pm on an August evening allowed the late sunshine to highlight various aspects of Beth Chatto’s world-famous Gravel Garden, the planting selected specifically for its capacity to withstand drought. f/13, 1/50sec.

PGPA, June 2023

‘Urban terraced garden at the height of summer’

Awarded 1st place, Image of the Month

A multi-level garden for entertaining and family space, designed by Coralie Estrade. This clever terrace captures the last of the evening sun and solves the problem of a steeply sloping garden.

PGPA, May 2023

‘Beth Chatto’s water garden in May’

Awarded 1st place, Image of the Month

This is the view that horticultural pioneer Beth Chatto would have enjoyed from her living room window each evening – a golden hour with magical light, captured around 6pm in mid-May, f/9, 1/100.

PGPA, February 2022

‘February afternoon sunshine’

Awarded 1st place, Image of the Month

Taken on the first visit of a private commission to photograph a Hampshire garden throughout the year. It became apparent that an evening plus an early morning session each month would help to record the very best of this varied and beautiful garden. This early setting sun was around 2:30pm.

PGPA, March 2022

‘Little lights’

Awarded 2nd place, Image of the Month

From a sunrise session (around 7:30am) on the edge of the North Downs, where fog filled the valley below to give beautifully diffused light, but sunshine on the hillside illuminated these Fritillaria meleagris in the dew of dawn – I think they look like vintage standard lamps!

PGPA, April 2022

‘First light, late frost’

Awarded 2nd place, Image of the Month

Sunrise begins to get earlier but always worth the effort, particularly when sunrays catch the scattered glitter of a late frost on this Hampshire orchard garden and copper beech. Taken around 6:30am.

PGPA, June 2022

‘Jay Robin’s Rose Garden’

Awarded 1st place, Image of the Month

Taken at sunset (around 8:30pm) on a midsummer’s evening at Borde Hill Gardens, Haywards Heath, West Sussex. The roses were at their glorious height and I could see that the setting sun would help to illuminate the fountain – so it was worth waiting patiently!

PGPA, November 2022

‘Pleached beech, autumn edition’

Awarded 1st place, Image of the Month

A mid-afternoon at Chilworth Manor, Surrey, hunting for the copper colours of the season. This was a scene that needed a splash of sunlight to bring it to life – the clouds allowed the light through for only half a minute or so! The beech avenue grabs the attention even more when dressed in its autumn brights.
