Over and out for 2025. More great craic like this Over and out for 2025. More great craic like this for next year, I hope, with beautiful gardens and fabulous collaborations in the pipeline. Happy Hogmanay friends, and thanks for all your support!
Before the year turns and 2025 fades into the dist Before the year turns and 2025 fades into the distance, I wanted to thank you for your support, friendship and kind words this past year. It means more than you’ll know to connect with people in some small way through the images I make. I see more strongly than ever that gardens calm and regulate us, with the natural cycle of things bringing rhythm and a gentler pace, restoring balance. And the people I meet, in the course of this job that I love, are the most wonderfully uplifting and determined colleagues. Thank you to all who I’ve worked with this year, you make the world a better place 💚

These pictures from a play date with @wildstonefloral are of one of Leanne’s fabulous creations with the very last of the year’s dahlias. We felt like exploring the style of the Dutch Masters - and that Savoy cabbage was not wasted, it went into a veggie soup shortly afterward!
Shining winter lanterns of Nicandra physalodes vs Shining winter lanterns of Nicandra physalodes vs its autumn appearance. Seedheads are magic, aren’t they? Not the end, but the beginning of the garden springing to life before too long. Still laughing that when I made a note of the name, my phone wanted to autocorrect to No, Andrea 🤭 Thanks for the ident @scott.brooksgardens 😄

In winter, the view of the Water Garden at @bethch In winter, the view of the Water Garden at @bethchattogardens completely opens up. You can see from end to end of the series of ponds; the stream is uncovered, the trees show their individual skeleton forms; a heron sits watching over the reservoir reflections. In my opinion, there is nothing quite as reviving as a wintery walk in this low, delicious light. The stillness of winter is unmatched at any other time of year; meanwhile, the first Galanthus, Narcissus and Hellebores have broken through. Saturday is the garden’s last day of the season before taking a winter break until February (and a couple of wonderfully sunny days squeezing in, if you need the headspace of a walk while basking in rays, as I often stop to do while photographing!).

I was going to get up early and go to RHS Wisley o I was going to get up early and go to RHS Wisley on this frosty morning but the frost disappeared too quickly… No, I lie, I was actually under a weighted blanket with a cat on my legs and I didn’t feel like getting up in the cold 🤷🏻‍♀️ Can you relate? Hibernation mode is here, my friends.

Instead, this is a selection of Wisley photos from one of their early morning photography openings in the autumn. It’s so nice to chat to other people there with their cameras waiting to see what they can find. I headed to the @pietoudolf hill - I adore the swathes of grasses punctuated with colour, and when the light comes through, it’s just dreamy. And then headed over to my pal @ann_mariepowell’s World Food and Wildlife gardens for a leisurely wander. This doesn’t actually feel that long ago, but as we all know, December is a whirlwind and then January will have 392 days…

An oldie from @chilworthmanorvineyard, looking thr An oldie from @chilworthmanorvineyard, looking through the lens of @davidharbersculptures ‘Portal’. The autumn colour of a pleached row of Fagus sylvatica hangs on, while the leaves of the vineyard fade for another year and the trees of the Surrey Hills catch the afternoon sun. Also, this is your heads-up that the Vineyard has some terrific Christmas experiences coming up, including Christmas trees, sing along, the release of their new Classic Cuvée ‘The Bishop’ 2019, and of course their famous festive Glögg!

This climate-resilient, pollinator & wildlife frie This climate-resilient, pollinator & wildlife friendly, non-irrigated planting project will feature on Gardeners World this Friday. The place hums with bees; housemartins have moved in to nest where such rich food sources are found. It’s resistant to weeds and looks good all year round, changing with the shifting seasons. Could these ideas implemented by @bethchattogardens, a collaboration with @lanswoodltd, see a seismic shift in the way new-build gardens are planned? Looking forward to seeing @aritanderson explore the continuing legacy of Beth Chatto with the team on the telly!
