The Navium Marine: Blue Mind Garden was the Gold m The Navium Marine: Blue Mind Garden was the Gold medal-winning best balcony by the hugely talented @ashleighaylett at @the_rhs Chelsea Flower Show. You’ll see how it changes in different light conditions - which is very much how I feel about the sea, it’s never the same twice 💙 Ashleigh combined the sensory qualities of still and running water, with planting designed to be coastal and drought tolerant. Every detail was considered, and conjured up the feel of the coast - including, floor tiles and @sarahbryandesign glazed pots made from discarded shells; @shell_on_earth gravel-alternative dressing; and @exyd_com rippled wall panelling to reflect the light. Planting included Tulbaghia violacea; Armenia maritima; Mertensia maritima; thyme, Stachys byzantina and gorgeously tumbling Erigeron. When you can’t get to the sea to decompress, what a beautiful space to reduce tension and restore calm!

I’m not sure there are enough words of gratitude I’m not sure there are enough words of gratitude for being introduced to the wonderful team at @dsscotland. Their show garden for @the_rhs Chelsea Flower Show, designed by first-timers Nick Burton and Duncan Hall (@burtonhallgardendesign), has been so completely joyful to work on. A garden worthy of the wide smiles of visitors and volunteers, it was utterly playful, fittingly blossoming, and packed full of colour and texture. Some of my favourite touches were Camassia nurtured from bulbs by the kids supported by the charity; Frances Priest’s floral motif tiles including the cheeky water pedal; the ‘Hug’ structure that welcomed visitors in with all the warmth that I felt from the team in person. Naturalistic planting, from richly colourful to shady woodland floor, featured Betula nigra; a gorgeous Scots pine; iris and primula.
Eddie McConnell, Chief Executive of Down’s Syndrome Scotland, brought his always-cheery disposition to accompany volunteer Fiona onto the illusion bridge, exclaiming “Award-winning garden!” to the cheers of delighted onlookers. The Silver-Gilt medal has now had its rightful upgrade to People’s Choice Award for a small garden - an excellent parallel for the garden’s message of living life to its fullest potential, with understanding, inclusion and support. There’s so much more I could say but the Gaelic proverb inscribed on the bench puts it into words far better than I can: ‘Cruaidh mar am fraoch, buan mar an giuthas’ / “Hard as the heather, lasting as the pine”. 🌲

What a fantastic platform for charities is offered What a fantastic platform for charities is offered by @the_rhs and @project.giving.back! It’s such a wonderful opportunity to get people engaged in the conversation - and the ADHD Garden, designed by @goodgrounding Katy Terry, has been doing just that. Right from the outset, working with Katy has been such a privilege: she positively fizzes with ideas and I’m so thrilled she was awarded an amazing Silver-Gilt medal as a first-timer at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show!
From the go-your-own-way Carpinus betulus Swing Tree, to the 1-in-5 Hydrangea petiolaris (one proudly a vertical stand-alone with four supported by @molliemcmillen_basketmaker’s woven fencing behind). From the ethereal steel mesh umbrellas by world-renowned @davidbegbie (one of the five a subtly different shade to the others) to the anomalies in the planting scheme - whether in colour, form or shape - allowed to thrive amongst the cohesion of the rest… There is so much to take in, and it really got people talking to the @adhdfoundation about the message of the garden, rooted in Katy’s own ADHD diagnosis just a couple of years ago. Let us know your thoughts on it all below!

Dark, chaotic, yet hyper focused with study and a Dark, chaotic, yet hyper focused with study and a love of plants - this striking indoor show garden ‘Neo Flora’ reflected a teenage state of mind. @forestinterioruk had covered every inch of her show stand with neon, posters, memorabilia and greenery. For anyone supporting students through exam time right now, get them an indoor plant! The nurturing - whether it’s a Monstera, Philodendron or succulent - might be just what they need to strike that delicate balance for mental health. The @rhsmalvern Spring Festival was the first @the_rhs show to include judged indoor show gardens, and I was delighted that this cleverly thought-out, environmentally conscious room won a Gold for designers John Tallis and Megan Warren-Davis.

This captivating garden at RHS Malvern last week w This captivating garden at RHS Malvern last week was full of nature-forward details & texture-rich planting that I absolutely loved! ‘Biosis - Mode of Life’ channelled rainwater from a green roof via a striking tower of blackthorn, and into a wildlife pond. Low-maintenance - supporting biodiversity, and growing to the conditions rather than fighting against them - this Gold medal-winning garden felt like a very harmonious, peaceful and eco-sensitive space. Huge congratulations to designers @frantazika, Jenny Rafferty and @jamesgoodman.garden.design, with landscapers @humblebeegardeners 🙌🏼

Fit to burst with all the fullness of Spring, the Fit to burst with all the fullness of Spring, the land is fresh, green and fertile right now. It feels like an awakening as nature gets into full flow. This allium head, the paper-thin onion skin stretched and beginning to give way, caught my eye at Beth Chatto’s garden this week. In the evening sunlight (oh, what a joy to have had warm sun lately!) it was like an x-ray revealing the inner workings that will soon become apparent. Strength and fragility in equal measure, held in a spotlight.

This truly excellent, multi-purpose garden by @mar This truly excellent, multi-purpose garden by @mark_payne_landscape_design_ transitions effortlessly from the tulips and wisteria of Spring, to the hazy days of summer. Incorporating a tropical feel to the planting, it plays with traditional expectations for an English cottage garden… One of my favourite features is the series of moon gates, inviting you through the different spaces in the garden. Maintained beautifully by @payneandford.

Just a reminder that glorious @arundelcastleuk is Just a reminder that glorious @arundelcastleuk is open all this Easter weekend to showcase the tulip festival, as well as the family-friendly Medieval Festival. I would urge you to make enough time to venture around the entire grounds - the courtyard and kitchen garden are like a sweetie shop of wonderful colour, but the thousands of naturalised bulbs throughout the castle landscape are really something else. Narcissus giving way to tulips with Camassia just emerging - succession planting at its best.
