In school, I was pretty much a non-swimmer (hated In school, I was pretty much a non-swimmer (hated getting my face wet, ND problems) and only learnt to swim correctly as an adult. I’m not a strong swimmer but I’m working on it, and recently had a glimpse of why people (especially women) become so hooked on cold-water swimming. I get it now, and this garden design by @rachelplattdesign with a pool by @ellicarpools is a little slice of perfection. Wildlife and pet-friendly, the natural pool attracts bats, dragonflies and frogs; softening grasses blur into a herby, cottage-y feel including Salvia yangii and Oenothera lindheimeri. A fire pit area, vegetable garden, lighting by @kgelectrical_contractors and choice of dining areas make this such a dreamy space from dawn to dusk.

Many thanks to all for choosing to use these garden photographs and portraits 💚
I was so happy to read about the relocation of @ni I was so happy to read about the relocation of @nigel.dunnett’s Hospitalfield Arts Garden, to Ladyloan School in coastal Arbroath. I’d been lucky enough to have a minute or two in passing to capture it in glorious evening light at RHS Chelsea. This resilient and textural garden teaches us much about thriving in difficult conditions; the innovative planting into sand reminded me of what the team from Beth Chatto’s have been implementing in some garden spaces local to them. The free-draining, low fertility ground encourages deeper roots, and so planting can withstand harsher extremes of our changing climate. Swipe to see other dune photos from around the northern coasts of Scotland and the west of Ireland; plants never cease to amaze me with their defiance in the face of the elements!

This Notting Hill roof terrace really packs a punc This Notting Hill roof terrace really packs a punch with fragrant, textural planting and maximum use of the space. Clever clever planning by @ameliabouquetgardendesign, with Mediterranean style planting to withstand the harsher elements, trees and climbers providing privacy screening, and even a variety of seating choices according to the time of day. Wooden planters, table & benches by @ajw_studio; lightweight metal planters by @surreyironcraft; planting by @oalandscapes.

The Gabriel Ash RHS Portico greenhouse - made to o The Gabriel Ash RHS Portico greenhouse - made to order from Western Red Cedar. The wood is naturally rich in oils, and in a moisture-rich environment such as a greenhouse, resists decay without the need to treat it.
These images were taken on a beautiful autumn morning with the most magical mist last year, as the leaves began to turn. The team added some stylish touches to the already well-loved, elegant greenhouse - what a wonderful and useful space to be able to make the most of the season! Somewhere to grow, to read, to enjoy the fragrance, to hunker down and look after your mental and physical health when the weather is closing in… Have you guessed that autumn is my favourite?!

Do take a look at September’s @the_rhs The Garde Do take a look at September’s @the_rhs The Garden magazine to read a fascinating interview with royal artist Gillian Barlow. She was wonderful to meet and photograph, with a joyous enthusiasm for her art, colour-matching with absolute precision to flowers, leaves and reference pictures gathered in her studio. I particularly loved popping out into her wildlife-friendly garden where she took delight in the cinnabar moth caterpillars!

One whole year of the Meanwhile Garden… The firs One whole year of the Meanwhile Garden…
The first time I visited @bethchattogardens, we were told about a proposal to plant a pop-up garden into disused rubble ground in Colchester town centre. I’ve documented the team finishing prepping and planting; I’ve seen it showcased to visitors by @spaceshaper at the Beth Chatto Symposium last summer. Plants (invited plus other incomers, as intended) have settled right in. I’ve had chats with people sitting out and using the garden, talking about how beautifully the grasses catch the light. There are always parents walking a child through here; there are always teens on skateboards. There are tons of pollinators. One year on, and it quite literally buzzes with life. Pictures from last summer through to now.

It reminded me of the time I took photos for @nationalgardenscheme in the garden at Wildwood, Camberley, and took along my Courgette & Lime cake - which turned out pretty well, I thought! Recipe added in case ya fancy. Wildwood has now been opening for NGS for 20 years! 🎂 🎉 💛
