Beth Chatto: 100 years of a green pioneer

plant and garden

The 27th June 2023 saw a celebration of what would have been Beth Chatto’s 100th birthday. These images are from an exciting commission this year to document the changing seasons at the Beth Chatto Gardens in Elmstead Market, Essex, and the continuing influence of one of the most recognisable names in horticulture. The photographs here span the summer months at her home, showcasing the topographical variety and her pioneering horticultural approach – from shaded woodland to water gardens.

Beth’s friendship with artist and plantsman Cedric Morris influenced the forms and structure of her planting. The Mediterranean Garden’s columnar yews (Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata’) echo a favourite Morris artwork of Portuguese rooftops and belltowers. Her emphasis on ecological, sustainable principles is demonstrated in the iconic Gravel Garden which, Beth said, was to have the appearance of a “winding dried up riverbed”. Never irrigated, only containing plants suitable for surviving drought – allowing them to perform within their optimum conditions – it has proved to be ahead of its time.

Naturalistic perennial planting and love of foliage are evident in what she famously described as a “green tapestry”, principles which remain at the influential forefront thanks to the skilled gardening team led by Åsa Gregers-Warg. Ongoing improvements and replanting in the prairie-style Reservoir Garden were previously given Beth’s blessing. The series of ponds constituting the Water Garden – the view from Beth’s home – were formed by working with the cooler, moisture-loving channel of land, rather than against it.

I hope that the photographs make you want to step in and wander around! Do visit if you’re in the area; I’ve aimed to illustrate Beth’s method and inspirations – views that would have delighted her – in a centenary year when her presence is still felt so keenly.
