A bit out of the ordinary that I should be somewhere taking photos at night! I had the privilege of a preview at the wonderful RHS Wisley Glow event. @alantitchmarshmbe and @wisemandebbie were there with a musical narration of Alan’s tale of Jack Frost: A Winter Story, brought to life with Debbie’s masterful music. It was truly special to have a live preview of the CD - of course, I took a few photos, including one beneath Wisley’s ever-maturing wisteria arch, currently bedecked in appropriately wisteria-coloured lights. You’ll hear some of the music as you follow the Glow route around the gardens, and it’s all rather magical and rainbow-coloured… Thank you @the_rhs for a very memorable evening! (PR invite)

Putting my hand up today as a lover of decay in the garden. The more I learn about the cycle of the year, the more I see it not so much as an end, but just the beginning. There’s an emotional grace about the bowing-out of the year, and beauty in these fading details. “The skeletons of the plants are for me as important as the flowers,” says @pietoudolf. “You accept death. You don’t take the plants out, because they still look good. And brown is also a colour.”

It’s just been my favourite year yet for so many reasons, not least the wonderful privilege of getting to see the places I’m asked to visit, capture, and show off in their very best light. Low light is the garden photographer’s friend. I’ll bet you already knew this without realising. The long lazy shadows that delight you at the end of a day; the way the light skips across the gentle undulations of fields as you travel home. Kisses of sunlight picking out the form of individual tree canopies in woodland, branches edged with gold so you can see their structure.

Last month at Beth Chatto’s, I arrived in the dark and the air was damp - it made excellent conditions for what the Japanese term ‘komorebi’; “sunlight filtered through trees”. To me, it’s like a magical portal that you just can’t resist gravitating towards! I’ve been reading @catherine_horwood’s wonderful biography of Beth, aiming to connect and understand the garden even more deeply. I can only imagine the joy she would have taken in an autumn morning like this.

Cannot get over how magical the woodland garden is right now at @bethchattogardens. I was chatting with the garden team about this - that although you’re enclosed by a tree canopy, it’s the part that feels like breathing space. Which, I suppose, is exactly what trees gift to us. When everything becomes so calm that you find beauty in every detail, it becomes hard to tear yourself away…

Though I was tasked with capturing a selection of photos for @the_rhs The Garden magazine, it felt like such a huge privilege to spend some time in the company of these two. Just being able to soak up a little bit of their immense shared knowledge and passion for nature, while chatting on the subject of trees, was so uplifting. If you’re an RHS member, do read about @kategbradbury and @chrisgpackham2 taking a wander through Chris’s garden in the November copy of The Garden magazine. I do hope you’ll find it inspires you, too.
